Oakland A’s winter/fall update: Photos and notes

Arizona Fall League

Going into Tuesday’s game against the Scottsdale Scorpions, the Mesa Solar Sox are riding a three-game winning streak. They sit atop their division with a 6-5 overall record.

Sheldon Neuse has four extra-base hits and 10 RBI in nine games played. He is batting .286/.359/.514. Sean Murphy is also off to a solid start offensively. He has a .280/.419/.360 line through seven games. Tyler Ramirez hasn’t played in more than a week due to back soreness.

On the mound, Nolan Blackwood is leading the way with three scoreless appearances. He has five strike-outs, one walk and one hit allowed in three innings. Logan Shore has six strike-outs and has induced four GIDPs, but he has allowed six runs on 14 hits in eight innings over two starts. Miguel Romero recovered from a rough second outing to throw a scoreless inning on Monday. He has allowed three earned runs in 3.2 innings with three strike-outs and two walks. Sam Bragg also threw a scoreless inning on Monday. He has allowed two runs in three innings this season.

Winter League Updates

Jorge Mateo made his debut for the Toros del Este of the Dominican Winter League last week. Through five games, he is batting .286/.286/.429 with a homerun and two stolen bases. He is currently riding a four-game hitting streak. Fellow A’s prospect Yairo Munoz is also on the Toros. He has appeared in three games and has two hits in 12 at-bats. He has also stolen a base.

A’s prospects Melvin Mercedes and Beau Taylor have been reunited with the Gigantes del Cibao of the DWL. Mercedes has four hits and five walks in 13 official at-bats for the Gigantes (.526 OBP). He has appeared in four games. Taylor has two hits and three walks in 16 official at-bats spread out over five games for Cibao.

In Mexico, Santiago Chavez is off to a nice start at the plate for the Charros de Jalisco. He has four hits and a walk in 14 official at-bats. Jake Smolinski has two homeruns and four doubles in 11 games for the Yaquis de Obregon, but he is batting only .195 with a .244 OBP thus far.

In Venezuela, Jhenderson Hurtado has appeared in four games for the Bravos de Magarita and has yet to allow a run in 2.2 innings. He has allowed a hit and a walk and he has one strike-out. Jesus Zambrano has not allowed a run in 4.2 innings for the Navegantes del Magallanes. He has allowed two hits and two walks and he has struck-out three.
