The day before the start of the 2018 regular season, the Oakland A’s made their final moves to set their Opening Day roster. The A’s optioned infielder Franklin Barreto, outfielder/first baseman Mark Canha, outfielder Dustin Fowler and pitchers Trevor Cahill and Frankie Montas to Triple-A Nashville. The A’s also outrighted pitcher Raul Alcantara to Nashville and re-assigned Sheldon NeuseSimon Castro and Beau Taylor to minor league camp.

Ryan Dull (shoulder), Renato Nunez (hamstring), Paul Blackburn (forearm) and Josh Phegley (broken fingers) will start the season on the 10-day disabled list, retroactive to March 26.

With these final moves, the A’s will begin the year with Boog Powell and Jake Smolinski platooning in center field, while Fowler starts the year playing everyday in Nashville. Canha will also get regular at-bats with the Sounds at first base and in the corner outfield spots. Alcantara cleared waivers and is now a non-roster player in the A’s organization (he was out of options). With the A’s light on Triple-A starting pitching to begin the year, Alcantara could be stretched out as a starter after spending spring training pitching out of the bullpen. The A’s could also move Montas into the Sounds’ rotation to stretch him out for either a rotation or long relief role in the big leagues. He is in his final option year.

Cahill is expected to make a couple of starts with the Sounds before joining the A’s rotation. He threw three innings for the A’s against the Giants on Tuesday. The A’s would like Cahill to be around the 90-100 pitch mark before he joins the rotation.

The A’s will open with a five-man starting rotation of Kendall GravemanSean ManaeaDaniel GossettDaniel Mengden and Andrew Triggs. They will carry eight relievers: Blake Treinen (RHP), Chris Hatcher (RHP), Emilio Pagan (RHP), Ryan Buchter (LHP), Yusmeiro Petit (RHP), Danny Coulombe (LHP), Santiago Casilla (RHP) and Liam Hendriks (RHP).

Chad Pinder will serve as the A’s primary backup middle infielder, as well as a backup outfielder and first baseman. Bruce Maxwell will be the A’s backup catcher. Below is the full Opening Day roster. The A’s begin their season at home on Thursday at 1:05pm versus the Angels.

Fact they sent Barreto to the minors stamps the fact that the imbeciles running this team are completely clueless. Kid has a great spring, they punish. Exactly why they lose every year. Incompetence.
