The Oakland A’s outrighted Josh Smith, Simon Castro and Michael Brady from the 40-man roster on Monday. The A’s also reinstated Bobby Wahl, Paul Blackburn, Andrew Triggs and Dustin Fowler from the 60-day disabled list. The A’s 40-man roster is now at 40 players.
Smith split the 2017 season between Triple-A Nashville and the A’s. With the Sounds, Smith had a 3.70 ERA in 41.1 innings. He struck-out 44 and walked 11. With the A’s, Smith had a 4.89 ERA in 35 innings. He struck-out 25 and walked 15. Smith wasn’t promoted to Oakland when rosters expanded in September.
Castro began the season as a non-roster invitee to spring training after signing a minor league free agent contract with the A’s last off-season. Castro served as the Sounds’ closer for the first half of the season. He had a 3.32 ERA and four saves in 38 innings for Nashville. He struck-out 63 and walked 21. Castro was promoted to the A’s bullpen on July 16 and he spent the rest of the season with Oakland. In 37 innings, he had a 4.38 ERA. He had 35 strike-outs and 14 walks and he allowed two homeruns.
Brady, a Cal alum, was also a non-roster invitee to the A’s spring training camp after signing a minor league free agent contract. An infielder when selected by the Marlins in 2009, Brady converted to the mound in 2010 and spent the next six-plus seasons pitching in the minor leagues and overseas before getting his first chance in the big leagues with Oakland. For Nashville, Brady split his time between the rotation and the bullpen. He had a 3.21 ERA and a 51:6 K:BB in 53.1 innings. With the A’s, Brady made 16 relief appearances. He had a 5.68 ERA with a 24:6 K:BB in 31.2 innings. Brady allowed five homeruns.
These moves won’t be the last changes to the A’s 40-man roster. Oakland will need to open spots for players they want to protect from the Rule 5 draft by the end of November.
