Neuse gives AFL East squad the edge

Sheldon Neuse connected on a one-out, RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning, breaking a 2-2 tie in the Arizona Fall League’s Fall Stars game. The AFL East Squad would go on to earn a 4-2 victory.

Neuse, the A’s only representative in the game, had that single in two at-bats.

The infielder is batting .286/.355/.589 with four homers and 18 RBI in 15 regular season AFL games. On Thursday, he hit a walk-off homer for Mesa in the 10th inning. Below is video of the homerun from Kimberly Contreras.

Other Notes:

— Late last week, the A’s announced that they had picked up infielder Jed Lowrie‘s 2018 team option and have added Mark Kotsay to the big league coaching staff as a Major League Quality Control coach. Kotsay was the A’s third base coach for much of last season.

— Jorge Mateo had a productive weekend for the Toros del Este. In three games, he had five hits in 14 at-bats, including a double. He also stole three bases. In 15 Dominican Winter League games, Mateo is batting .246/.246/.338 with eight stolen bases.

— Beau Taylor had two hits and two walks in four official at-bats in two games for the Gigantes del Cibao of the DWL this weekend.

According to the Venezuelan newspaper MeridianoFranklin Barreto‘s expected stint with the Águilas del Zulia was delayed by a dental issue that resulted in a tooth extraction. Meridiano reports that Barreto isn’t likely to play for Zulia this winter because his recovery from the dental surgery will sideline him for at least another two weeks.

— Santiago Chavez is nearing the end of a successful stint with the Charros de Jalisco of the Mexican Winter League. Chavez is batting .308 with a .379 OBP in 13 games for the Charros this winter.

— Longtime A’s Director of Minor League Operations Ted Polakowski left the organization in early October. The A’s haven’t named a replacement for Polakowski as of Sunday.

Neuse just keeps doing it and I’m pretty sure his rise in part makes decision to trade Healy that much easier. Neuse should start the year in AAA as I don’t see anyone blocking his path… Schrock should be in AAA,but he is being blocked as well as mateo. Considering Mateo already on 40man as well as Munoz, the clock is ticking… I’m just not sure who they plan on Manning left field if Davis is DH, Nuñez? He has better arm strength than Davis but takes awful angles in outfield. As of now no one is ready in our farm, Ramirez defensively is prob ready and he has been as fast a riser as Neuse, but AFL didn’t go as well as Neuse and with Neuse being former pitcher And all infield spots are secure that they wouldn’t try him in left…BJ Boyd could be tried out in left if he is protected. I see him more as a bench bat, but you never know. But, be nice to get a bat in lineup if not 2 that can hit .300+ to go along with all the home run/double power hitters.

Fowler/Powell/Brugman will all get a shot at LF, as will probably Canha and maybe Boyd. Longterm, Neuse could be an interesting option if they can’t find a spot in the infield for him. He’s a good athlete with a strong arm. Ramirez is another intriguing player. Very solid defensively and an impressive approach at the plate.
