Oakland A’s Special Assistant to the General Manager was honored by Minor League Baseball as the 2017 Sheldon “Chief” Bender award winner. The award is presented to “an individual with distinguished service who has been instrumental in player development.”
Fuson first joined the A’s in 1982 as an area scout. He was the A’s Scouting Director from 1995-2001, during which time he drafted Eric Chavez, Tim Hudson, Mark Mulder and Barry Zito, among others. Fuson left the A’s organization in 2002 and returned in 2010 as a special assistant to the GM.
The Chief Bender award was first given out in 2008. A’s Director of Player Development Keith Lieppman earned the honor in 2009. The A’s are the only organization to have two members earn the award.
— Sheldon Neuse collected two more hits, including a double, and two more RBI in Mesa’s 5-1 win over Peoria. Neuse now has 20 RBI in 17 AFL games and he has a 929 OPS. Miguel Romero threw a scoreless inning in the victory. Mesa is now 14-9 on the season.
— Jorge Mateo homered twice on Monday for the Toros del Este and Yairo Munoz returned to DWL action with the Toros on Monday. Munoz went 0-2 on Monday but walked twice on Tuesday. He missed three weeks with a hand strain. Mateo got off to a slow start to the DWL season, but he has a five-game hitting streak and has upped his average to .260.
— Former A’s right-hander Fautino De Los Santos got the win for the Toros on Tuesday. De Los Santos hasn’t allowed a run in five innings this winter. He hasn’t pitched in affiliated baseball since 2013.
— Sandber Pimentel made his 2017 DWL debut on Monday for the Estrellas Orientales. Pimentel went 0-4 on Monday, but he went 1-2 with a triple and two walks on Tuesday.
