The Oakland Athletics announced their final 2018 big league coaching staff on Monday, adding Al Pedrique from outside of the organization and changing the roles for incumbent coaches Marcus Jensen and Mike Aldrete.
Pedrique joins the A’s as the team’s new first base coach. Aldrete, who had previously been announced as the A’s first base coach, will take over as the team’s assistant hitting coach. Jensen, the previous assistant hitting coach, will take on the bullpen coaching role. That role was vacated by Garvin Alston, who left the organization to serve as the Minnesota Twins’ new pitching coach.
Pedrique spent three seasons in the big leagues as a player, but he has a long history as a major league and minor league coach and manager. A native of Venezuela, Pedrique spent last season as the Triple-A manager for the New York Yankees. Pedrique was an interim big league manager of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2004 and served as the bench coach for the Houston Astros in 2010 and 2011. He has more than 2o years of professional experience in coaching, managing and player development.
Aldrete will begin his fifth season on manager Bob Melvin’s staff with the A’s. He has previously served as the A’s bench coach and first base coach. Aldrete was a hitting coach for the D-Backs in 2005-2006 and an assistant hitting coach for the St. Louis Cardinals in 2010.
Jensen will be taking on an entirely new role as the bullpen coach. He spent the last three seasons as the A’s assistant hitting coach. Prior to that, Jensen was the A’s minor league hitting coordinator (2014) and a manager in the A’s minor league system. He has also worked closely with A’s catchers in both the minor leagues and the major leagues.
The A’s official 2018 coaching staff is as follows:
Manager: Bob Melvin
Bench Coach: Ryan Christenson
Pitching Coach: Scott Emerson
Hitting Coach: Darren Bush
First Base Coach: Al Pedrique
Third Base Coach: Matt Williams
