Oakland Athletics acquire Sam Moll

The Oakland Athletics picked up another reliever on Wednesday, this time LHP Sam Moll.

For a second straight day, the Oakland Athletics acquired a reliever. On Tuesday, it was RHP Chris Hatcher, who officially joins the A’s 25-man roster today. On Wednesday, the A’s picked up LHP Sam Moll from the Colorado Rockies for cash or a PTBNL. Moll has been optioned to Triple-A Nashville. To make room for Hatcher on the A’s 25-man roster, Oakland optioned RHP Josh Smith.

Moll was designated for assignment by the Rockies earlier this week. The 25-year-old has spent his entire season with Triple-A Albuquerque. He has a 4.18 ERA and a 39:18 K:BB in 47.1 innings. Lefties have hit .306 against him this year, but last season with Albuquerque, lefties hit .246 against him. The 2013 third-round pick has yet to make his major league debut.

The A’s are light on left-handed relief options in the upper-levels of their minor league system, so Moll is likely to receive a September call-up from the A’s this year.
