Sounds’ roster shifting
The Nashville Sounds’ roster will look significantly different when they head out west for an eight-game roadtrip against the Fresno Grizzlies and the Sacramento RiverCats. The Sounds will be getting back outfielder Jaff Decker, who cleared waivers over the weekend and was outrighted to Nashville. Decker was designated for assignment earlier in the week to make room for Mark Canha.
Nashville will also be welcoming back catcher Bruce Maxwell, who tweeted after the A’s loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday that he would be headed to Fresno. Maxwell is expected to be optioned to Nashville to make room for starter Sean Manaea, who will return from the disabled list to start the A’s game against Seattle on Monday.
The Sounds also said goodbye to two veteran members of their roster on Sunday. FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reported that outfielder Andrew Lambo was granted his release. Lambo had been on the disabled list, but Rosenthal reports that he is now healthy and available to sign with another team. The San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser reported that left-hander Ross Detwiler opted out of his Triple-A contract with the A’s and will be looking for another team as a free agent.
The A’s have yet to announce the Maxwell, Lambo or Detwiler transactions, but it stands to reason that there will be additional roster movement to accommodate those moves before Nashville’s game on Monday.
The A’s will also need to make a roster move with Double-A Midland on Monday, as they have yet to fill the roster spot vacated by Joe Bennie over the weekend. Bennie asked for and was granted his release by the organization on Saturday. If the A’s sent a player from Stockton to Midland to fill Bennie’s spot, the transaction ripple effect will likely extend all the way to Extended Spring Training.
Sunday was a rough day for the A’s organization on the field, as the A’s and all three minor league affiliates that were in action found themselves in the losing column. The Nashville Sounds and the Midland RockHounds were both shutout in their losses, while the Stockton Ports saw their losing streak reach seven games.
— The Ports homered three times but their pitching staff struggled in the gusty winds in Lancaster, allowing 11 runs on 15 hits. Logan Shore allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings, while reliever Jared Lyons allowed six runs in 1.2 innings. Seth Brown homered twice and Josh Vidales connected for his first homerun of the year to account for the Stockton offense. Mikey White had two doubles to raise his season slashline to .250/.346/.483 on the year. He has a 1038 OPS in 12 games in May.
— Yairo Munoz had his first multi-hit game of the season on Sunday in the RockHounds’ 4-0 loss to Corpus Christi. Munoz went 2-for-4 in his 10th game back after missing time with a strained hamstring. One of the hits was a double. Brett Vertigan also had two hits to raise his average to .310 for the season. James Naile allowed just one earned run (three total) in 5.2 innings in his longest start of the year. Joel Seddon allowed a run in 2.1 innings, but he struck-out five. The RockHounds split their four-game set with Corpus Christi.
— A trio of two-run innings did in Nashville starter Paul Blackburn in the Sounds’ 6-0 loss to Albuquerque. Blackburn allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings in the loss. Tucker Healy and Detwiler each tossed two scoreless innings. The outing turned out to be Detwiler’s final one in the A’s organization. The Sounds managed just four hits, two of them coming from Joey Wendle, who is now batting .270 on the year. A day after hitting two homeruns, Matt Olson went 0-for-4. Even with the 0-fer, Olson has an 834 OPS for the year and an 873 OPS in May. Renato Nunez had a hit and a walk in the game. He already has 12 walks this season in 31 games after collecting 31 walks in 128 games last year. He has an 873 OPS for the year.
