The Oakland A’s officially filled their two remaining Arizona Fall League slots with pitchers Norge Ruiz and Nolan Blackwood. We previously reported that Blackwood would be added to the Mesa Solar Sox’s roster at the conclusion of the Texas League playoffs.
Ruiz and Blackwood join Miguel Romero and Logan Shore as A’s pitchers on the Mesa staff. All four pitchers spent significant time with the High-A Stockton Ports this season. Both Romero and Ruiz finished the season dealing with minor injuries, but both were cleared to play in the AFL. Romero and Ruiz signed with the A’s as international amateur free agents out of Cuba last off-season. Both had their 2017 season debuts delayed by visa issues.
Ruiz had a 4.37 ERA in 57.2 innings split between the DSL A’s, the AZL A’s and Stockton this season. He struck-out 42 and walked 15.
In other news, James Kaprielian and Daulton Jefferies are set to begin their throwing programs on September 29, according to A’s Director of Player Development Keith Lieppman. They were previously scheduled to begin throwing around the 15th, but they will begin with 45-foot tosses on the 29th instead. Both top pitching prospects are recovering from Tommy John surgeries they had in April.
